Birra Peroni, 1913

Birreria Peroni, 1902

Standing as a monument to Rome’s industrial heritage, the former Birra Peroni brewery in Piazza Alessandria was once a bustling hub of beer production and a symbol of Italian craftsmanship. Founded in 1846 by Francesco Peroni in Vigevano, the company expanded to Rome in the early 20th century, establishing this iconic brewery in the Trieste neighborhood.

The complex, with its distinctive red-brick façade and industrial architecture, reflected the functional yet imposing style of early 1900s factory design. For decades, the brewery was not just a production site but a local landmark, its towering structures and unmistakable malt aromas defining the area. Workers and delivery trucks came and went, while nearby residents grew accustomed to the rhythms of brewing—a tradition that lasted well into the late 20th century.

However, as urban development shifted and industrial operations moved elsewhere, the brewery ceased production in the 1970s. The site, though no longer active, retained its historic charm, with some sections repurposed over the years. Today, Piazza Alessandria remains a witness to this legacy, with traces of the old brewery still evoking memories of a time when beer-making was a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s identity.

Though the Peroni brand lives on under international ownership, the original Roman brewery stands as a nostalgic reminder of an era when local industry shaped the city’s character.
