Getting Around Rome and Beyond: A Traveler’s Guide

Rome is a bustling city with excellent transport options, whether you're exploring the historic center or venturing further afield (up to 100 km). Here’s how to navigate efficiently using public transport, ride-sharing, and private services.


1. Moving Around Central Rome

Public Transport (ATAC)

Rome’s public transport includes buses, trams, metro lines, and urban trains. Tickets are interchangeable across all services.

  • Ticket Types:

    • BIT (€1.50): Valid for 100 minutes (one metro ride + unlimited buses/trams).

    • 24h Ticket (€7): Unlimited travel for 24 hours.

    • Roma 72h (€18): Unlimited travel for 72 hours.

  • Metro:

    • Line A (Orange): Connects Vatican (Ottaviano), Spanish Steps (Spagna), Termini.

    • Line B (Blue): Colosseum (Colosseo), Piramide (Testaccio), Tiburtina Station.

    • Line C (Green): Eastern suburbs (limited tourist use).

  • Buses & Trams: Useful for reaching areas without metro access (e.g., Trastevere).

  • Urban Trains (FL lines): Short trips (e.g., Roma Ostiense → Trastevere).

💡 Tip: Validate tickets before boarding! Use TicketsApp or machines at metro stations.

Bike & Scooter Sharing

  • Enjoy (cars & scooters)

  • BikeMi (bikes)

📌 Rules: Ride in bike lanes; helmets recommended.

Taxi & Ride-Hailing

  • Official Taxis: White cabs with "TAXI" sign. Use FreeNow or ItTaxi apps.

    • Starting fare: €3.50 (day), €6.50 (night).

    • Always ensure the meter is running.

  • Uber: Only Uber Black (expensive) available.


2. Day Trips (Up to 100 km from Rome)

By Train (Trenitalia / Italo)

  • Ostia Antica (30 min, €2.10) – Take Roma-Lido train from Piramide.

  • Tivoli (Villa d’Este) (1h, €3.60) – Regional train from Tiburtina.

  • Orvieto (1h, €8-15) – Fast train from Termini.

  • Florence (1.5h, €20-50) – Frecciarossa from Termini.

By Bus (Cotral / FlixBus)

  • Castelli Romani (Frascati, Castel Gandolfo) – Cotral buses from Anagnina Metro.

  • Civitavecchia (Cruise Port) (1h, €5) – Train from Termini or Roma Ostiense.

  • Naples / Pompeii (2h, €10-20) – Italo or Trenitalia trains.

Car Sharing & Rentals

  • Enjoy (short rentals, €0.30/min + €0.90/km).

  • ShareNow (BMW/Mini cars).

  • Traditional Rentals (Hertz, Avis, Europcar at Termini/Fiumicino).

🚗 Tip: ZTL (traffic-limited zones) in central Rome—avoid driving there!
